Poets

The woman sitting at the small table next to him in the Lithuanian Artists Republic must have been a poet.

He expected to meet poets everywhere, as the city was small and the poetry festival would start the following day. He was sure she was perceiving something similar, while glancing at him without really looking. It was more with her whole face, with an expression of contradiction. Her eyes were looking to a thought she was chewing around in her head, the awareness of somebody who was giving her attention without wanting to admit that she had noticed him, too.

Yes, there he was, must have been her thought, a poet who’s going to take part at the festival, the same as he was thinking of her.

Something in her way of paying attention to nothing more than the vibrations of the room in which they were sitting confirmed to him that she was a poet. But he saw her eyebrows raised and her face overshadowed by wrinkles of tiredness.

However, he didn’t find the courage to start a conversation and he would never find out.
